Every day at work I have dismissal duty. It’s at about 3pm when the Florida August sun is blazing and the air doesn’t move while the humidity seems to be cranked up as high as it can go. I’m just a Wisconsin girl, trying not to melt as I pace the pavement in denim or some other material that seems to trap moisture rather than wick it. My purpose is to help kids and parents cross the street safely. I try to hide the beads of sweat running down my face with a fan and sunglasses, but apparently it was too hard to miss this week as parents made comments about neck fans I could buy on Amazon.
There is one small tree by my duty post and its shadow saves me. Anytime there is a break in pedestrians, I run to the shade created by that tree’s shadow for relief. I read Psalm 91:1 this morning which reads “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty". I desperately seek the shadow of that little tree when I feel a little discomfort from the sun. Am I desperately seeking to “abide in the shadow of the Almighty” when life gets uncomfortable? That question inspired me to write this:
His Shadow
As we dwell in the shelter of the Most High
As we dwell in the shelter of the Most High
We can dwell in the shelter of the Most High
And dwell in the shelter of the Most High
That leads back to the shelter of the Most High
As we dwell in the shelter of the Most High
When our hearts were hardened by pride or shame
He did not give up or forget our name
He found us and brought us into the shelter of the Most High
When problems approach and we don’t know how to fight
We cry out to Him and He takes our plight
While we dwell in the shelter of the Most High
When a life on earth ends and we gather in grief
We can celebrate the miracle of our loved one’s belief
That one day, together, we will be dwelling in the glorious shelter of the Most High
When we witness an act of God’s love and grace
When miracles happen or healing takes place
May we not forget how much we always need the shelter of the Most High.
